What is genetic variation (diversity)
Then types of variation ( gene flow, mutation evolution eyc)
Then explain each type with examples

Expert Solution

  • Genetic variation is  describes the variation in the DNA sequence in each of our genomes.
  • There are three types of genetic variation they are; mutation, gene flow and sexual reproduction.

A mutation is a change occuring in our DNA sequence due to mistakes when the DNA is copied or due to environmental factors like UVlight and cigarette smoke. They are of different types Point Mutations Insertions and Deletions.Example includes Sickle Cell anaemia is an example of point mutation. Here the defect is caused by the substitution of glutamic acid by valine at the sixth position of β globin chain of haemoglobin molecule.

A gene flow is the transfer of genetic variation from one population to another. It is also known as gene migration.Example the movement of genes from one populationof beetle to another.

Sexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction involving the fusion of haploid female gamete and haploid male gamete.Example sexuual reproduction in humans.

The neutral mutation hypothesis does NOT suggest that: (a) The evolution of most genetic variation in a population is influenced by genetic drift (b) When natural selection is at work on protein variants, it will lead to little variation in the population (c) Most molecular variation is adaptively neutral- for example, most protein variants are functionally equivalent. Which of the following statements is a misconception about evolution of populations? Without genetic variation, evolution would not be possible. Microevolution is a change in the genetic structure of a population over time. Most heritable variation involves quantitative characters. Natural selection acts on individuals. For a population to evolve, individual members of the population must also evolve.
