Managing Change, change process-

Managing change is an approach to effectively implement the planned changes in the organization. Managing change is critical for the organization to ensure that changes are smoothly and thoroughly so that the purpose of the change is achieved.

On the other hand, change process is sequential steps that a change management team follow to effectively apply the changes to achieve the desired objectives.

Internal external forces of managing change; why people resist to change?

The internal factors are the internal forces of an organization that influence change management. The internal forces are events, people, systems, working conditions, leadership, management, etc.

External forces are factors outside the organization that influence change management. For example, customers, competitors, economy, legal, political, etc. These external factors are beyond the control of the organization.

People resist change because of the following reasons-

  • Fear of job loss (threat to job security)
  • Poorly aligned reward system which does not motivate individuals to accept change.
  • Fear of what is going to happen next.
  • Peer pressure to protect the co-workers
  • An atmosphere of mistrust with the management.

Explain Calm water metaphor- Unfreezing, change and refreezing

The calm water metaphor views change management as a large ship crossing a calm sea. The large ship here denotes the organization as a whole. The change goes through three phases namely, unfreezing, change and refreezing. The organization is at the equilibrium phase initially. Hence, the organization needs unfreezing first to move from the equilibrium state. Unfreezing can be done by increasing the driving forces which are nothing by force to drive the change. The forces that resist change are decreased. This step involves two approaches namely to push the driving forces and reduce the resisting forces.

Since the organization has now moved from its equilibrium position, the change can be implemented. However, the organization needs to be refreezing to ensure sustainability of the changes. The refreezing step is accomplished by reinforcing the new change and behaviors and thus stabilizing the situation.
