In this module, you will look for an article or news story/video that relates to one or more of the following topics:

displacement in two or three dimensions

speed in two or three dimensions

velocity in two or three dimensions

acceleration in two or three dimensions

By the end of the third day of the module, create a thread with a 250-word post including one or more of the topics listed above, an active hyperlink to your resource (this resource cannot be used by another student), a summary of the resource itself, a summary of the material you are learning in this module as it relates to your resource (cite portions of the textbook), and an explanation of how the topic or resource ties to your everyday life.

In short, find an article that ties into one of the above topics and provide a link and a short desciption of the article and how it applies to displacement, speed, acceleration, and velocity in two or three dimensions. The article should apply to everyday life.

Please do not copy from someones previously made posts. I will thumbs up promptly if the answer meets the requirements. Thank you!

Topic:

Projectile motion

Summary of the resource:

This resource is an interactive applet which can describe the projectile motion as based on Newton's equation of motion. You will learn to project a car out of the cannon.Hence you will learn how to hit a target! It will be possible to fire various objects and hence learn about the specifics of projectile motion. Parameters such as angle, initial speed, and mass can be set and the simulation started. The vector representation of velocity and acceleration can be seen clearly in this simulation. One can add air resistance to investigate how it affects the velocity of propagation and hence the range and maximum height attained.

What one can learn

  • How the parameters like initial height, initial angle, initial speed, mass, diameter, and altitude affect the trajectory of an object thrown
  • How the aforementioned parameters change if one takes into account air resistance.
  • How and why the initial conditions affect the trajectory of the projectile
  • given certain initial conditions, qualitatively and quantitatively investigate where an object will land after throwing at a certain angle.
  • Whether the motion in the two dimensions, x and y of a projectile are independent of each other. Why?
  • Investigate the air resistance.
  • The effect of this air resistance on both components of velocity and acceleration.

Apply in daily life

  • Projectile motion is a phenomenon understanding of which is essential in daily life. There are numerous times when use the physics of projectile.
  • Some examples are: newspaper delivery boy throwing the newspaper on your doorstep, throwing a ball while fielding in sports like cricket and baseball, firing a bullet etc. The air resistance is influenced by many factors like humidity content of air, speed of the object, cross sectional area of the object among others. This air resistance will put a drag on the object thrown and hence affect the trajectory of the projectile(Range, maximum height, velocity and acceleration in both x and y directions at each point on its trajectory) Hence, consideration of air resistance is essential while understanding projectile motion in the context of practical applications.
