WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING WOULD LEAD TO A MORE ACIDIC SOLUTION

A. .1M HClO2 or 0.1M HBrO2

B.0.05M HClO2 or .05M HClO4

Solutions

Expert Solution

A. .1M HClO2 or 0.1M HBrO2

Both acids have same concentration. The acid having higher acid strength will give more acidic solution.

HClO2 is more acidic than HBrO2. The acidic character of oxyacids (having different halogen but same oxidation state) decreases with increase in atomic number of halogen.

Hence, .1M HClO2 would lead to more acidic solution.

B.0.05M HClO2 or .05M HClO4

Both acids have same concentration. The acid having higher acid strength will give more acidic solution.

HClO4 is more acidic than HClO2. The acidic character of oxyacids (having same halogen but different oxidation state) increases with increase in oxidation number.

Hence, .05M HClO4 would lead to more acidic solution.
