ALBANY PLAN OF UNION

Albany plan of Union was a plan to create a unified government for thirteen colonies, suggested by Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of USA, at the Albany congress, july 10, 1754. The plan mainly represented an attempt to formulate a union of the colonies under a single government for defense and other general important purposes.

PROPOSAL

The Albany proposal of 1754, proposed subordinate coordination to the british crown. It was a plan to place the British North American colonies under a more centralzed government. The Albany plan gave the Grand Council even more relative authority, members of which were selected by the colonial governments. The plan also encouraged to levy taxes by the government for its own support. The framers aimed at reforming colonial imperial relation stand to recognize that the colonies collectively share common interest.

What became of it?

The plan ended up with failiure despite the support of many colonial leaders. The plan was either denied or not acted upon for the colonial governments feared that their authority and territorial rights would be curbed. The aspiration to be independent from The Great Britain didn't let the plan conceive. The Albany Plan failed for the colonial goverments feared losing power, territory and commerce to the british government and the other colonies.

WHAT ALBANY PLANNED FORESHADOWED?

Despite its failiure it served as a model for future attempts of union. It attempted to establish the division between the legeslative and excecutive branches of the government. Also, establishing common governmental authority to deal with external relations.

The Albany Plan served as a precursor to the draft articles of the confederation.
