The Rocket Model of Team Effectiveness is prescriptive in that it tells leaders what steps to take and when to take them when building new teams. The model can also be used as a diagnostic tool for understanding where existing teams are falling short and what leaders need to do to get them back on track.
You are to choose to describe this model and its components either as a prescriptive or diagnostic tool within a fictional or existing work environment you may be involved with.
Explain all 8 of the components of the model and their relation to your chosen setting. How can the use of this model support an effective team within your chosen setting?
The rocket model of team effectiveness is intended to tell leaders what to do when building a new team.
It can also be used as a diagnostic tool to understand where
there are groups and what leaders need to do to bring them
back.
Background: What's the situation?
An important first step in building a highly effective team is to
fit the team context. Most groups are influenced or influenced by
competitors, clothing substitutes, government regulators, market
conditions, other internal groups, large organizations and
others.
Mission: What are we trying to achieve?
The mission component of the rocket model involves determining the
overall direction for the team.
Talent:
Who's on the bus?
The talent component of the rocket model is to answer the five
questions correctly: Does the team have the right people, have the
right organizational structure in the right roles, the right
skills, and the right reasons.
Standard:
What are the rules?
Normal is the law that governs the conditions of decision making,
holding meetings, holding team members accountable for results, and
sharing information.

Does everyone join and participate? The buying team is to engage
with team members in the process of setting goals, roles and
setting policies.
Powers: Do we have enough resources?
The power component of the rocket model refers to the decision
period and the resources the group must reach.
Moral: Can't we be harmonious? One way leaders can improve morale
is to work with team members to develop rules for resolving team
conflicts. On the other hand, one of the best techniques to destroy
a moral group is to have the leader ignore the interpersonal
conflict or tell the team members to stop the fight and just
understand each other. Teams experience artificial harmony when
rejected team members bring up controversial topics.
Results:
Did we win?
These components tell team leaders what they need to do to improve
their mission, standards, and more. One of the things we know about
successful military leaders and sports coaches is that they teach
their teams to win.
Implications of the rocket model. Specimens of both primary and
diagnostic rocket. When building a new team or identifying where a
team is, leaders must begin with components of the mission and
talent context before moving on to other parts of the model.
