In any given year, an estimated 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and another 30 million experience occasional sleep disorders serious enough to disrupt their daily activities (Purves & Piatt, 2012; Shin et al., 2014). Please provide references with your argument.

Judging by these statistics, and your own experiences, it's not surprising to learn that almost everyone has difficulty sleeping at some point in his or her lifetime.

1. How are you affected by sleep deprivation and disruption of your circadian rhythms?

2. Imagine hearing a TV interview of a woman who reportedly has gone without sleep for two weeks, and now claims that “she's feeling better than ever.” Would you trust this report? What questions would you ask to help verify her claims?

3. Which of the major theories of dreaming best explains your own dreams?

Expert Solution

  • 1)sleep deprivation has been my problem because of night shifts I used to do which is the reason I left that job. I used to experience insomnia during the day when I was supposed to sleep because of which weight gain took place and also my metabolic rate got affected. Also I used to feel lethargic and low mood throughout my work.
  • 2)I dont think I will believe her that afte two weeks of not sleeping she was feeling better. Extreme lack of sleep can make the person ill, confusion, irritability, headaches etc. And extreme insomnia can also lead to death but certainly the person would not feel better.
  • 3)The activation-synthesis model of dreaming which says that we dream during REM sleep and the brain synthesizes and interprets this internal activity and attempts to find meaning in these signals, which results in dreaming. This model suggests that dreams are a subjective interpretation of signals generated by the brain during sleep. Since I have very detailed dreams and I always try to remember what I saw and what it meant.Sometimes I dont remember them but sometimes I remember the complete dream and try to interpret it and mostly I dream when I am not in a deep sleep
