Human heart is a muscular organ that helps pump blood around the
body and along with circulatory system it delivers oxygen and
nutrients across the body cells. There is a network of arteries and
veins called cardiovascular system that helps its functioning. The
heart has 4 chambers and 4 valves for pumping blood in the right
direction. The 2 chambers in the upper region is called atria and 2
chambers in lower region are called ventricles.
The four valves in the heart are Tricuspid valve which is located
between the right atrium and right ventricle,Pulmonary valve that
is located between right ventricle and pulmonary artery,Mitral
valve that is located between left atrium and left ventricle and
Aortic valve located between left ventricle and aorta(the largest
artery beginning at the top of left ventricle).Mitral valve has two
thin flaps of tissues called cusps and all other three valves have
three flaps. When left ventricle relaxes mitral valve is opened and
aortic valve is closed that lets blood flow from left atrium to
left ventricle and if left ventricle contracts then mitral valve is
closed and aorta valve is opened that lets blood flow into the
aorta. When right ventricle relaxes pulmonary valve is closed and
tricuspid valve is opened that lets blood flow from right atrium to
right ventricle. When right ventricle contracts pulmonary valve is
opened and tricuspid valve is closed that lets blood out from right
ventricle to lungs. From lungs oxygenated blood reaches left
atrium.
