Describe the valves in the heart. Name all four valves and where blow flows coming into and out of each valve

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Heart have four valves. Out of them two are atrioventricular valves and two are semilunar valves.
  • Atrioventricular valves are situated between the atria and ventricles.
  • Semilunar valves are placed at the opening of the blood vessels that is systemic aorta and pulmonary artery.
  • The valves of the heart permit the flow of blood through the heart in only one direction.
  • Mitral or bicuspid valve - left atrioventricular valve is known as mitral or bicuspid valve. It is formed by the two cusps.
  • Tricuspid valve - right atrioventricular valve is known as a tricuspid valve. It is formed by the three cusps.
  • The cusps of the atrioventricular valves are attached to the papillary muscles by means of chordae tendinae. The papillary muscles play an important role in closure of the cusps and it prevents back flow of blood from ventricle to atria during ventricular contraction.
  • The semilunar valves allows blood flow during atrial contraction from atria into the ventricles.
  • Semilunar valves are present at the opening of the systemic aorta and pulmonary artery and also known as aortic valve and pulmonary valve respectively.
  • Because of there half moon shaped ,they are called as semilunar valves.
  • Each semilunar valves have three flaps.
  • The aortic semilunar valve allows flow of blood from left ventricle into the aorta during ventricular contraction and prevent back flow of blood during ventricular relaxation.
  • The pulmonary semilunar valve allows flow of blood from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery during ventricular contraction and prevents back flow of blood during ventricular relaxation.
