Crisis Intervention in getting into focus by media as natural disasters, wars and catastrophies are unfortunately getting more and more common, different questions are raised regarding their efficacy particularly as a preventive measure against Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD. Issues regarding the proper timing and optimal modality is still not well defined. This article come across crisis intervention from concepts to implimentations.
Proximity: Familiar environment is reassuring for the victim.
Immediacy: In an acute/emergency situation, urgency is the watch word that demands immediate action for effective intervention.
Expectancy: A crisis intervention provider should be familiar, optimistic, and hopeful for the client, even when a situation seems hopeless. The therapist should instill a sense of hope and provide encouraging words for victims.
Brevity: This is of the essence. A swift moment of intervention might be a saving grace.
Simplicity: “Keep it simple.” Complex processes might not serve well in a critical time for successful victim management. Providers often have regular practices in preparation for crisis intervention. At some point, intervention becomes a “reflex action.” I can confirm this high degree of readiness in my clinical experience in the emergency room.
Creativity: The art of innovation and improvisation can be an essential part of readiness and simplicity in crisis intervention.
Practical: Every action must be practical. Otherwise, it has no place in a critical situation where life is at stake and time is of the essence.
