Shunt compensation - in this type of compensation device is connected in parallel with transmission line. By doing this the current flowing through the line changes.
Components of shunt compensator are -
.shunt capacitor - when the load is lagging power factor in nature and if the situation is of under voltage then to boost the receiving end voltage we need to connect the shunt capacitor which both improves power factor of the system and hence it is called power factor improvement device. diagram is shown below-
series compensation-in this type of compensation device is connected in series with transmission line. By doing this we can change the magnitude of series impedance.
Series capacitor- capacitor is connected in series with transmission line where the transmission line series reactance reduced which is results in the change of voltage drop of the transmission line. It improves the voltage regulation .
