calculate the de Brolie wavelength for a molecule of (Ch_4) at -5degree c.

Solutions

Expert Solution

CH4 molecule has molar mass 16 g /mol

Hence 1 CH4 molecule mass = molar mass / avaagadro number       ( since avagadronumber = 1mol)

                = 16 / (6.023x10^23) = 2.6565 x 10^ -23 g = 2.6565x0^-27 kg

Temp T = -5C = -5+273 = 268

average kinetci energy of CH4 = 3/2 kT         where k is Boltman constant

= ( 1.5 x 1.38 x 10^ -23 ) x ( 268)

= 5.5476 x 10^-21 J

Momentum P ^2 = Kinetic enegy x 2m

P^2 = ( 5.5476 x 10^ -21) x ( 2.6565x10^-27 kg)

P = 3.84 x 10^ -24

now debroglie wavelength i given by   lamda = ( h / p)

                 = ( 6.625x10^-34 J/s) / ( 3.84x10^-24)

                = 1.725 x 10^-10 m
