Trabeculae are tissue element composed of dense collagenous tissue. They are present in the form of strut or small beam.

They have a mechanical function and provide structural support and strength to the spongy bones which are present at the ends of long bones. They mainly grow or change in response to mechanical stress.

Trabecular bone is the spongy or cancellous bone and performs regenerative and regular functions in the body. Due to greater surface area this bone is suitable for metabolic activities. Blood cell production or haematopoiesis occurs in this bone as it is highly vascular in nature.
