Solutions

Expert Solution

characteristics and superpowers would a phosphorus superhero have

1. Phosphorus exists in two most common allotropes i.e., white phosphorus and red phosphorus.

2. White phosphorus exposed to air glows in the dark, a phenomenon called as phosphorescence and is most reactve (Able to start fires) among its allotropes.

3. White phosphorus is converted to red phosphorus when exposed to sunlight or heated in its own vapor to 250°C. Hence it is stored under water to prevent oxidation.

4. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for animals and plants. In the form phosphate ion, PO43−. It plays a critical role in cell development and is a key component of molecules that store energy, such as ATP (adenosine triphosphate), DNA (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid) and lipids (fats and oils).

5. Red phosphorus is used to make safety matches, tracer bullets, phosphates are used as fertilizers.

6. Phosphates are also used to make certain glasses (e.g., for sodium lamps). Trisodium phosphate is used as a cleaner, water softener, and scale/corrosion inhibitor.

7. Bone ash (calcium phosphate) is used to make chinaware and to make monocalcium phosphate for baking powder.

8. Phosphorus is used to make steels and phosphor bronze and is added to other alloys.

9. Phosphorus is an essential element in plant and animal cytoplasm.

10. In humans, it is essential for proper skeletal and nervous system formation and function.

11. The use organophosphorus compounds in detergents, pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.), and weaponised as nerve agents.

In view of above we can say that Phosphorous is a superhero or it have superpowers.
