1) You were the top student in your physiology class last semester. For this reason, your professor has asked that you prepare some lectures for her physiology class this semester. Specifically, she would like you to discuss the similarities and differences between the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, in terms of pressure gradients and fluid flow.

Explain how will you describe the role of the following structures: the pump and the tubes.

2) Julia is breathing 14 times per minute, with a tidal volume of 520 mL and a dead space of 152 mL. Lyle is breathing 15 times per minute, with a tidal volume of 400 mL and a dead space of 175 ml. Which patient has better alveolar ventilation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1)

Cardiovascular system

Blood pressure gradient is the difference in the blood pressure inside the vasculature. The tone of blood vessel plays an important in the regulation of pressure gradients.

  1. Smooth muscles of blood vessel normally exhibit tone,a state of prolonged partial contractrion
  2. Blood pressure is mostly influenced by the resistance of the blood vessels(arterioles, small arteries etc)
  3. The vasoconstriction increases the vascular tone and thereby increases the blood pressure and the vasodialation increases the blood pressure.
  4. By altering the activity of vascular smooth muscle the vasoconstrictor and vasodialator agents alter blood pressure.
  5. By altering the intracellular calcium concentration in vascular smooth muscle many of the chemicals affects the vascular tone.

Respiratory system

The pressure gradient in pulmonary circulation where the amount of blood ejected by heart is equal to the amount ejected to the systemic circulation.

The factors affecting pulmonary blood flow are

  1. pulmonary vascular resistance
  2. Gravity
  3. Arterial to venous pressure gradient
  4. Alveolar pressure
  • pulmonary vascular resistance is affected by lung volumes, hormones, and oxygen
  • Due to the effect of gravity,in upright posture pulmonary blood flow increases from apex to the base of lungs
  • The rate of blood flow determines by the pressure differnce between the aterial and venous compartment.
  • Alveolar pressure depends on lung volume.Difference in alveolar pressure changes pulmonary blood pressure and floe due to lung volume.

2)

Julia has better alveolar ventilation

Because here the dead space is low which ia 152ml with a tidal volume of 520ml.so the tidal volue that doesnot take part in gas exchange is less.

In your previous studies last semester, you encountered reactions went to completion and were written A + B → C + D. You are now learning about reactions that achieve equilibrium and are written A + B ↔ C + D. Give the definitions of both types of reactions and justify the statement using mathematical relations that "reactions that go to completion are a subclass of the more general equilibrium reaction."

For a physiology class experiment, a student is fitted with a lightweight waterproof device that measures her average pulse rate over 2-hourly intervals. Consider 12 consecutive intervals over a 24-hour period, and let X be the number of these intervals in which the average pulse rate is less than 100 beats per minute. Is it reasonable to treat X as an observation from a binomial distribution? Justify your answer.

The scores on the final of a math class last semester had a median of 28 out of 40, with the highest score of 39 and a lowest score of 6. Suppose that the curve had a normal distribution. Suppose I took a simple random sample of 3 students from last semester and found their scores on the final to be 15, 30, and 36. We wish to test the hypothesis that the average of all the students in the...

As a part-time student, you took three courses last semester. Write, run, and test a C++ program that calculates and displays the numerical grades, the equivalent letter grades and your grade point average (GPA) for the semester. Your program should prompt the user to enter the numerical grade and credit hours for each course. This information should then be displayed in a tabular format. A warning message should be printed if the GPA is less than 2.0 and a congratulatory...

In your last semester of nursing school, you note that your clinical instructor changes teaching tactics. No one looks over your shoulder any longer during every assessment, you are allowed more freedom to perform assessments and make clinical judgments, the clinical hours coincide with normal shift hours, and you are allowed to volunteer to perform nursing procedures with staff nurses. Although this makes you nervous, you realize that this is necessary for your transition into nursing practice. Top of Form...
