How many muscles are associated with plantar flexion and what are their names?
Where do each of their tendons insert into?
Plantar flexion is A movement exhibited by ankle joint where the
foot flexes away from the body.
The main muscles that cause plantar flexion our gastrocnemius,
soleus and plantaris. Other muscles associated with plantarflexion
are flexor hallucis longus, tibialis posterior, perineus brevis and
longus, flexor digitorum longus.
Gastrocnemius and soleus muscles form a common tendon that attaches
the muscle to the calcaneum bone known as Achilles tendon. Achilles
tendon also provides attachment to plantaris muscle.
Tibialis posterior inserts at the navicular bone and medial
cuneiform and the base of second, third and fourth
metatarsal.
Flexor hallucis longus tendon inserts at the plantar surface of
base of distal phalanx of great toe.
Flexor digitorum longus tendon terminates at the base of last
phalanges of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th toes.
Peroneus longus tendon inserts at lateral side of base of 1st
metatarsal bone and lateral medial cuneiform bone.
Peroneus brevis tendon insert into the lateral side of the base of
fifthmetata
