How many l values are associated with n = 3? (b) How many ml values are associated with l = 1

Solutions

Expert Solution

a)

For nth orbital possible values of azimuthal quantum number (subshell), l are from 0 to (n-1). Total of 'n' values.

In n=3, them l=0,1,2  thus there are 3 subshells i.e.s,p,d respectively.

For n=3, possible values of l and ml are:

ml=0 for l=0; total ml values =1

ml= −1,0,1 for l=1; total ml values =3

ml=−2,−1,0,1,2 for l=2; total ml values =5

Therefore in n=3, number of subshells( l) =3, orbitals=9

b)

Magnetic quantum number ml have values from -l to +l and total of ( 2l+1 ) values.

ml=−1,0,1 for l=1; total ml values = 3
