1.) The Doppler effect takes on two forms: blueshift and redshift. Where do these names come from? How might it be possible to explain their sig- nificance in terms of an approaching or receding sourceof water waves? Is the water situation identical to the light situation? Why or why not?

1. Doppler's effect is defined as the apparent change in frequency or wavelength of a wave (sound waves,light waves,water waves) as heard by an observer due to relative motion between the source of wave and observer.

Red shift and blue shift are the two terms used to denotes Doppler effect in case of light waves, in fact, any electromagnetic waves. Visible light consist of seven colours distributed according to their wavelength or frequency, from violet colour to red colour, highest wavelength is for red colour while blue colour appears in lower wavelength region. The hen a source emitting light or any other electromagnetic wave is going away from the observer the wavelength of light will shift to ards longer wavelength or shorter wavelength or red side of the spectrum and termed as red shift. Similarly when the source is approaching the observer then the wavelength of light received by observer will shift to wander shorter wavelength or blue side and termed as blue shift.

It is not like that the concept of blue and red shifts are applied to light waves only. We can also use this concept of blue and red shifts to water waves also. When a source of a water wave is approaching an observer on the bank of a pond then frequency of the water waves as received by the observer on the bank will increase or blue shifted while if the source of the water waves is going away from the observer the frequency of the water waves as received by the observer on the bank will be decreasing or red shifted.

Yes, both are identical because no matter the types of wave whenever there is a relative motion between the source of wave and observer there will be shift in frequency as received by the observer or there will be Doppler effect associated with it.
