  1. Using graphing software such as Excel®, graph the results of Activity 1. Please see the Introduction to Graphing manual for guidance.

             a. What are the two variables that you graphed?

b.Which is the independent variable? Should it be on the X- or Y-axis? Why?

             c. Which is the dependent variable? Should it be on the X- or Y-axis? Why?

Note: This a chemistry experiment, where we try to dissolve a Alka-Seltzer® tablet in 3 different temp of water. C = Cold , RT = Room temp, H = Hot. Then we record the time the tablet takes to dissolve in each cup of water (we do this 3 times for each cup with different temp). I know that the independent variable is the temp and the dependent variable is the time the tablet takes to dissolve, but I do not know how to graph the data on Excel or which needs to be on the x or y axis.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a. Two variables are Temp. & Time .

b. Here time is to being measured based on the time a tablet takes to dissolved into water at different temp.

Thus , Temp - independent variable . Independent variable is always on X-axis. This is standard followed across globe.

c. Time - Dependent variable as it is dependent on the temp. of water. - Y axis

Step wise how to plot graph on excel -

1. Write the data in the cells as per fig.

2. Select the two columns of data representing variables - one independent & other dependent. (Yellow coloured portion to be selected by dragging the cursor)

3. After selection of data go to insert tab on top and select it.

4. After selecting insert tab - various tab functions will be opened as shown in fig below.

5. Select recommended charts and insert chart dialog box will be opened.

6. Select the first chart type (scatter). and you will get your graph.

A simulated exercise gave n = 22 observations on escape time (sec) for oil workers, from which the sample mean and sample standard deviation are 370.46 and 24.89, respectively.
