Given that a pair of homologous genes are expressed in a bacterial and a vertebrate cell at the same rate of transcription (bp transcribed/second) and at the same rate of translation (amino acids translated/second), provide three reasons why the bacterial forms of the 9 might be expressed at a much faster rate after gene activation.
In bacteria, translation starts soon after the transcription whereas in the vertebrate cell, translation starts after the completion of transcription.
Site of transcription and translation in bacteria is cytoplasm whereas in the vertebrate cells transcription occurs in nucleus and translation in the cytoplasm. So the time taken by the vertebrate cells is saved by the bacteria.
Gene of vertebrate consists of exons and introns. Exons are the coding region and introns are present between the exons. After transcription, all the introns are removed and exons are joined together. bacterial gene does not have any introns. So bacteria save the time that is required to remove introns.
