Please explain why : 1. Dextrose is insoluble in DCM, but is soluble in DMSO and water. 2. Why PLGA is soluble in DCM and DMSO, but not soluble in water. Please explain in terms of chemical structure, bonds that are forming between them, and in terms of pH if possible.
1) Dextrose is insoluble in DCM Dichloromethane but is soluble in DMSO Dimethyl sulphoxide.
i) "Like dissolve like" is a principal. Polar compounds dissolve in polar solvent and non-polar compouds dissolve in non-polar solvent.
ii) Dextrose (Glucose) is a polyhydroxy compound. Hydroxy group -O-H is a polar functionality and is capable of forming Hydrogen bond. This means Dextrose is a very polar compound with extensive ability of Hydrogen bonding.
iii) DCM is less moderately polar solvent & non capable of forming H-bonding. Wherase DMSO is very much polar solvent & is capable of forming Hydrogen bonding.
iv) Hence Polar compound Dextrose being polar dissolve in polar solvent DMSO but not in non-polar solvent DCM.
