Predict whether the following compounds are soluble or insoluble in water.

Predict whether the following compounds are soluble or insoluble in water.

Soluble Insoluble

NH4Br AgNO3 BaSO4 CoBr2 AgBr CuCO3

Solutions

Expert Solution

NH4Br is soluble in water because it is ionic in nature and is highly sublimable to form ammonia and ammonia is highly soluble in water

AgNO3 is also highly soluble in water as it forms Ag+1 and NO3- in water being ionic in nature

BaSO4 is insoluble in water as it forms a white precipitate , sulphates of heavy metal salts are insoluble except Be and Mg

CoBr2 is soluble in water (and is also readily soluble in organic solvent , it has ionic character and covalent character too so it is soluble in both)

AgBr is pale yellow precipitate and is insoluble in water

CuCO3 is insoluble in water , it can be soluble in Dil.HCl

As CuCO3 is basic in nature and it can react with acids to form salts.
