I think that assumptions are what lead to facts and without assumptions we would be no where. Do you think that is true? How do assumptions help us realize facts?
Ans
Yes, it is true.
Assumptions are the first step towards venturing into the unknowns. Facts are known and are proved. Each fact was proved based on assumption.
For example, it is a known fact that the sun is a star, but to prove that scientists had to assume what is a star and then define the characteristics of the star. When the characteristics of the sun met the requirements of a star, it was proved that the sun is a star and then it became a fact.
Assumptions tend to breakdown the complexity of the problem or the situation and help to arrive at a preliminary solution and uses contradiction of the actual scenario leading to the establishment of facts.
It is a common fact that is an irrational number but to prove that the basic assumption that is taken is that is a rational number and then when it fails the set of rules that defines it as a rational number, it is declared as an irrational number.
Assumptions act as initiators that help in deducing results, which can be compared further and the correct solutions can be generated.
In inventory management - Economic order quantity is a basic inventory model, whose main assumption is that the demand is deterministic. But in actuality demand are never deterministic and they fluctuate. It doesn't mean that this model cannot be used, whenever the fluctuation is minimal, this model can be used so that holding and ordering costs are lowered.
So assumptions are important and they are a way of doing things and as we proceed with the process considering assumptions, we stumble upon the facts, the realities.
