New Imperialsim refers to the colonial expansion of European countries during the period 1880 to 1914, when European countries undertook vigorous colonization to expand empire for empire's sake. European empires vied against each other for international territories.

Causes of new imperialism:

1. First cause was to safeguard trade routes and colonies that belonged to the European countries. They strategically protected their colonies and trade routes by occupying new lands.

2. Second cause was what is commonly called social darwinism. In order to survive the competition, each of them had to conquer new land.

3. Thirdly, to spread Christian faith, missionaries visited and colonized new lands.

4. Fourthly, in the name of bringing "civilization" to the bcakward areas, they conquered more land and exploited them.
