For each of the following, indicate if the species is a strong or weak acid. If it is a weak acid, write the hydrolysis reaction and the Ka expression.
HF
HI
HNO2
H2SO3
HClO3
HClO4
H2SO4
HClO
HF is a weak acid because it does not completely dissociate in water because the ions it forms upon dissociation are too strongly bound to each other for it to act as a strong acid.
Hydrolysis reaction of HF is
HF + H20 H3O+ + F-
Ka = [H3O+][F-] / [HF]
HI is a strong acid because it dissociates completely in water.
HNO2 is a weak acid and hydrolysis reaction is
HNO2 + H2O H3O+ + NO2-
Ka = [H3O+][NO2-] / [HNO2]
H2SO3 is a weak acid and Hydrolysis reaction is
H2SO3 + H2O H3O+ + HSO3-
Ka = [H3O+][HSO3-] / [H2SO3]
HClO3 and HClO4 are strong acids due to the multiple oxygens bonded to the central atom.
H2SO4 is a strong acid because it completely dissociates into ions with water.
HClO is a weak acid and hydrolysis reaction is
HClO + H2O H3O+ + ClO-
Ka = [H3O+][ClO-] / [HClO]
