Name That Metabolism!
For each of the following descriptions, please identify: the type of metabolism, the fuel source and final electron acceptor, and the steps of respiration needed to generate ATP.
Case 4: Methanobrevibacter smithii is a type of bacteria that lives in the guts of cows and other organisms. These bacteria use the hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide produced by gut microbes during fermentation and produce methane gas (CH4).
Case 5: Paracoccus denitrificans is an extremophile which uses methane and nitrates (NO3) and produces carbon dioxide and nitrites (NO2).
Case 5: Methanobrevibacter smithii is methanogens, These bacteria use the hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide and produce methane gas (CH4).
Methanogenesis is the process of generation of methane by methanogens. so, Methanobrevibacter smithii use Methanogenesis pathway to produce methane gas. The terminal electron acceptor in methanogenesis is carbon.
CO2 + 4 H2 → CH4 + 2 H2O
steps of methanogenesis: Check attached figure
Case 6: Paracoccus denitrificans
denitrification. : reduction of nitrates or nitrites by bacteria
Denitrification is the utilization of nitrate (NO3−) as the terminal electron acceptor.
steps : Check attached figure
