For each of the following descriptions, please identify: the type of metabolism, the fuel source and final electron acceptor, and the steps of respiration needed to generate ATP.
Case 1: Hydrogenovibrio thermophilus lives in a hyperthermal vent in the deep sea. The bacteria use hydrogen sulfide (HS) or hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen (O2) for their respiration.
Case 2: Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of bacteria that can live in your gut. These bacteria will use lactose and produce pyruvate which then becomes lactic acid.
Case 3: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common soil bacteria. These bacteria will metabolize sugars. When the bacteria are in an aerobic environment, they will use oxygen. In an anaerobic environment, they will use nitrate (NO3).
