please explain what is meant by critical path scheduling and describe the process of creating Gantt charts and Network diagrams

Solutions

Expert Solution

Critical path scheduling:

In the project management, there are various activities involved. The activities duration is known along with dependency which helps to determine the precedence. Basis this, Gantt chart or Network diagrams are plotted to determine the path which takes maximum time. That path is termed as Critical path as it determines the duration for overall project.

Process to form Gantt chart:

  • Identifying the activities which are involved in the project
  • Determining the duration of each activity
  • Identifying the dependency of activities to find out sequence or flow
  • Constructing the Gantt chart

The process for Network diagram is same as that Gantt chart with a difference that there are two options:

  • AOA - Activity on Arrow
  • AON - Activity on Node

Basis the ease and requirement, either can developed

Example of Network diagram:

Activity Activity time
A                     2
B                     4
C                     1
D                     2
E 3
F                     1
G                     2
H                     1

Critical path is: B-D-E-H as it takes maximum time
