This question is about the element beryllium (Be). You should use the Periodic Table to help you answer this question.
(a) How many electrons does an atom of beryllium have in its outermost shell? (1)
(b) Name the positively charged particles in a beryllium atom (1)
(c) How many neutrons are found in the nucleus of the most common sort of beryllium atom? Explain how you reached your answer. (3)
(d) Predict the formula of the compound beryllium hydroxide. Explain how you reached your answer. (2)
1(a) Beryllium has atomic number 4. so, number of electron is also 4 in beryllium atom and its electronic configuration is
1s2 2s2 so in its outermostshell number of electron is 2 i.e. Outermostshell shell 2s contain 2 electrons.
1(b) In beryllium atom name of positively charged particle isis proton which present in nucleus of beryllium atom.
1(c) Beryllium has an atomic number of 4 and an atomic mass or mass number is 9.
Number of proton = number of electron = atomic number
So, number of proton =atomic number =4
Number of neutrons = Mass Number - Number of Protons
=9-4
=5
1(d) Beryllium ion (Be2+) carry +2 charge and hydroxide ion (OH-1)carry - 1 charge. So formula of beryllium hydroxides becomes Be(OH)2.
