what's the product of the following reactions
1. C6H5Br + CH3-Cl/ALCl3 ?
2. CH3CHO + 1) CH3-Mg-Br/ether 2) H3O
Ans 1.
It is a Friedel - Crafts reaction , in which bromo benzene reacts with CH3Cl in the presence of AlCl3 to give para-Bromo toluene as the major and ortho -Bromo toluene as the minor organic product.
Ans 2 :
When grignard reagent react with aldehydes or ketones in the presene of ether , alcohols are produced.
The first step is the nucleophilic addition of grignard reagent to the carbonyl carbon which leads to the formation of an adduct. This is then followed by the hydrolysis to form alcohol as the major organic product.
So the product of this reaction will 2-propanol and Magnesium hydroxy bromide Mg(OH)Br.
