1. Which atom has its valence electrons in a single sublevel?

     (A) Cl
     (B) Mg
     (C) Al
     (D) P

1. Which atom has its valence electrons in a single sublevel?
2. Which element forms a stable diatomic molecule?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) Answer is Mg.

Atomic number of magnesium is 12 thus, it's electronic configuration is 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2. Hence, valence electrons are present only in 3s subshell. Whereas in other element it is present in different subshells.

2) Answer is Cl.

Electronic configuration of Cl is 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p5 hence it need only one electron to achieve stable noble gas configuration which can be obtained by forming diatomic molecule Cl2.

A Rydberg atom is an atom whose valence electrons are in states with a very large principal quantum number n. This means it has a probability cloud with a large amplitude a large distance from the nucleus. Evidence of such atoms has been detected by radio astronomers in the form of radiation from diffuse hydrogen gas in intersellar space. In fact, there is no theoritical limit on the size an atom can attain, provided it is free from outside influences....
