what major issues exist with regards to the legality of corrections programs? Explain
There are various common terminologies which you should have knowledge about while going through this concept Correctional program following are some of them:
(((The term “parolee” refers to an adult or juvenile who is on parole, “a period of conditional supervised release in the community following a prison term”. The term “inmate” will be used as a general term to describe people of all genders and ages who are housed within prisons. Another term is “recidivism.” “Recidivism is measured by criminal acts that resulted in the re-arrest, reconviction, or return to prison with or without a new sentence during a three-year period following the prisoner's release)))
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Correctional program refers to a type of program to which the criminal offenders are submitted. It includes both supervision and educational training given to correct the criminal offenders. In criminal justice, correction, corrections, and correctional, are umbrella terms describing a variety of functions typically carried out by government agencies, and involving the punishment, treatment, and supervision of persons who have been convicted of crimes. These functions commonly include imprisonment, parole and probation.
It is challenging to prepare offenders with the needed vocational skills and education to be successful in reintegrating back into society. Offenders, on average, are less educated than the general population. There are various issues exist with regards to the legality of corrections programs:-
Prison overcrowding: - is one of the major issues currently faced by many countries:- Inmates are being crowded into cells originally built for just one person . Prison overcrowding not only causes lack of space and facilities to accommodate prisoners, but also a host of other problems for prison administration. It causes strain on staff and effective administration. It impedes the vocational training and other correctional programs.
Institutionalization Of Juvenile Offenders:- A number of issues arise when considering the institutionalization of juvenile offenders. Juveniles frequently have histories of abuse .when juveniles are housed in prisons or jails, even when separated from adults, the stigma may do them more harm than good. Detention can increase recidivism and increases their chance of re-offending. ´ Detention pulls youth deeper into the juvenile and criminal justice system. ´ Detention can slow or interrupt the natural process of “aging out of delinquency.” ´ Detention makes mentally ill youth worse. ´ Detention puts youth at greater risk of self-harm. Formerly detained youth have reduced success in the labor market. ´ Detention is expensive—more expensive than alternatives to detention.
Caring for mentally ill inmates:- Studies show that people with mental illness are two to four times more likely to end up in prison. Many experts agree that countless incarcerations can be avoided by proper mental health treatment. The way the mentally ill individuals and treated the majority of them in the community rather than in state hospitals. On the surface, such a move likely sounds compassionate and empathetic. Because available community services were insufficient, however, the result of this widespread deinstitutionalization movement has been a dramatic increase in the number of mentally ill individuals sent to jails and prisons and placed on community-based sanction.
Female inmates: -There is a great bond o love between Mother and the child .It is Impossible for a mother to think of life without child. One issue that some female inmates face involves their roles as mothers (for those inmates who have children). Inmates who enter prison pregnant will give up custody of their child when the child is born, whereas those who already have children give up custody upon admission. In many of these cases, the mother may have already been the sole provider for the child.
Besides these there are various issues which you can analyze and can provide a proper suggestion for the improvement of the correction program and can help in making society more safe and free from crime.
