What is the effect on the concentration of ammonia, hydroxide ion, and ammonium ion when the following are added to a basic buffer solution of equal concentrations of ammonia and ammonium nitrate: a) KI b) NH3 c) HI d) NaOH e) NH4Cl. Can you explain what happens to the ammonium nitrate--is it ignored?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) KI it is neutral salt . so it cannot affect any ion concentration

b) NH3 :

on addition of NH3 , ammonia concentration will increases and hydroxide ion concentration also increases

but ammonium ion decreases

c ) it is acid HI

on addition of HI , ammonia concentration will decreases and hydroxide ion concentration also decreases but ammonium ion increases

d) NaOH . it is base

on addition of NaOH , ammonia concentration will increases and hydroxide ion concentration also increases   but ammonium ion decreases

e) NH4Cl :

ammonia ----------------> decreases

hydroxide ion ---------------> decreases

ammonium ion ----------------> increases

no we did not igone ammonium nitrate because NH4NO3 will dissociate into NH4+ and NO3-

here NO3- is spectator so we need not count NO3- concentration. we accounted NH4+ (ammonium ion) concnetration in all above cases
