What are McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y? Which do you think is more valid and why??

Solutions

Expert Solution

McGregor's Theory states that there are two contrasting theories specific to the two styles of management which are used based on the motivation level of the workforce.

Theory X - This theory is about the "Authroitarian Leadership style" which is used when the employees do not like theor work or they are demotivated to work. The managers in this scenario use an authoritarian style where they mircromanage the employees to get the work done.

Theory Y - This theory is about the "Participative Leadership style" which is used when the employees are motivated to work and require challenges. In this scenario, the managers act as facilitators and provide the employees all the resources to accomplish their jobs.

Theory Y is more valid in most cases as it not only increases the overall productivity at work. The approach motivates the employees to work hard and take challenges. It makes a manager's job easy and avoids conflicts at work.
