According to Erikson's theory, Adolescence is a period of personal and social identity formation, in which different roles, behaviors, they explore new ideas about themselves and their place in the world. It is happened between the teenage period (12–19 years).

In adolescence stage, children explore their independence and develop a sense of self by exploring the frontal lobes, which are the last areas of the brain to mature. The frontal lobes play a big role in coordinating complex decision making, impulse control, and being able to consider multiple options and consequences.

Those who get  proper encouragement and reinforcement through personal exploration will emerge from this stage with a strong sense of self and feelings of independence and control.

Those who remain unsure of their beliefs and desires will feel insecure and confused about themselves and the future.

By this process, socio-emotional development may be experienced during adolescence in relation to Erikson's theory of lifespan development.
