From your understanding, was the theory that leaders are born, not made already dispelled by the 1990s? This question is naturally up to interpretation but if you have the time I would enjoy your thoughts.
The theory which supports that leaders are born not made is called the Great Man Theory which was developed in the 19th century. Historian Thomas Carlyle had a lot of influence on the development of this theory. While developing this theory, many successful leaders were analyzed and it was found that the majority of these leaders are those who belong to the aristocratic rulers who gained their position because of their birth in the powerful families.
As the individuals who born in the less powerful families are associate of having lesser opportunity to advance in the ladder of power and fame and accomplish leadership role in the society thus the concept of leadership was considered to be inherently associated with the birth. Even today, most of the researchers think that thee leaders have some specific qualities or personality for the position and this it further proves that there are some inherent qualities which are important for the leaders to be effective.
Yes, after 1990, this scenario has been changed. With the proliferation of democracy and socialization of the ruling elite, greater opportunities are presented to every member of the society and thus the claim that leaders are born not made is taking a back burner. There have been a number of examples such as Mr. Barack Obama, Narendra Modi (current PM of India) and many more leaders are belong to a very humble background and they are leading their countries not due to their birth but because of their qualities.
