Scenario 4: Schedule Pressures – Safety-critical
Your team is working on a computer-controlled device for treating cancerous tumors. The computer controls direction, intensity, and timing of a beam that destroys the tumor. Various delays have put the project behind schedule, and the deadline is approaching. There will not be time to complete all the planned testing. The system has been functioning properly in the routine treatment scenarios tested so far. You are the project manager, and you are considering whether to deliver the system on time, while continuing testing and making patches if the team finds bugs.
Answer with Explanation as per scenario 4 :
1. Stakeholders Affected - the team, project manager (yourself), the organization receiving the delivery, the people on whom the controlled divide will be tested
2. Risks/Issues/Problems/Consequences
a) If delivered - the biggest risk is the failure of the computer-controlled divide since all planned testing is incomplete. Further, if the device fails then the blame would be on the project manager and his team for the faulty device. It can also cause physical harm/injuries to someone during the process.
b) If undelivered - given the manger and his team are running behind schedule non-delivery might result in them losing their contract. or even jobs.
3. Possible Actions
a) Delay the delivery by informing the authorities
b) Delay the delivery giving some other reason rather than testing
c) Deliver the device and do not inform the authorities
d) Deliver the device but inform the authorities about the still ongoing testing
4. Responsibilities of decision-maker
a) To make sure he is loyal to the customers
b) To make sure he is loyal to his team
c) To ensure that there are no consequences that impact the future of the firm.
5. Rights of the stakeholders
a) Right to be aware of the authenticity of the device
b) Right to be honest for crucial decisions
c) Right to ensure the safety of jobs/work at the firm
