Research 2 examples of cell communication in the human body. For each example identify the following components of the signaling pathway: signal, receptor, messengers, output effects

Solutions

Expert Solution

Example 1: Acetyl choline signalling pathway in synapses(paracrine pathway)

Signal : Action potential travelling through the neuron reaches the axon terminal, there is depolarisation and opening up of voltage gated calcium channels and influx of calcium

Messenger : Acetyl choline stored in the synaptic vesicles in terminal end of axon

Receptor :Acetyl choline receptors on muscles

Output effect :Muscle contraction

Example 2 : Insulin signalling pathway (endocrine pathway)

Signal :Increased blood glucose binds to GLUT 2 receptors in pancreatic beta cells and causes closing of potassium channels and opening of calcium channels which further causes release of insulin

Messenger : Insulin released from pancreatic beta cells

Receptor :Insulin receptor tyrosine kinase in liver, muscle, adipose tissue

Output effect : Conversion of glucose to glycogen in liver, glucose to fat in adipose tissue, glucose to amino acids.

Consider the following fictional examples of correlations found in research. In each example, the researcher explains the correlation by inferring causality. For each example, please provide at least two other possible explanations as to why the relationship exists. Consider the reverse causality or other external variables in your explanation.
