The malate/aspartate shuttle balances the redox environment between two membrane separated environments. This shuttle accomplishes this by adjusting what ratio?
The main function of the malate aspartate shuttle is to transport NADH molecules which are formed in glycolysis to the matrix of inner mitochondrial mmbrane. this shuttle uses malate and aspartate to transfer electrons to the inner membrane of mitochondria.
at the starting oxaloacetate and NADH together react and produce malate and NAD+ and at the end “malate” is going to pass through mitochondrial barrier into matrix (import through antiporter) from cytosol & in the process alpha-ketoglutarate export into the cytosol from the matrix. NADH then reduces oxaloacetate into malate & transfer malate into the mitochondria. The Glucose oxidation in cytosol starts continuing whereas malate, NAD+ is reglarly e converted back to oxaloacetate, & NADH
