"Authoritarian parenting was associated with lower academic achievement in Australia, China, and the United States, but it was associated with higher academic achievement in Hong Kong. Furthermore, within Australia and the United States, authoritarian parenting was associated with higher academic achievement among parents with low education/low income." Why might this be the case?

The reason that mothers are found to be more progressive in parenting styles could be the fact about the difference in the upbringing of males and females. It's has been seen that women are expected to be more adaptive and cooperating by nature. Maybe male's dominant nature stops them from accepting change, the fact that their parenting style isn't correct.
Studies have shown that it's not possible to pin point the reason when it comes to difference or similarities between lower and higher academic achieving communities. Authoritarian parenting in China, U.S and Australia (lower academic achieving people) coul be because of the fact that illiteracy do lead to Authoritarian parenting as the people who's illiterate are found to be more insecure, dominant and aggressive.
The reason it was found to be associated with higher academic achieving people could be due to the fact that people in Hong Kong have always followed Authoritarian parenting style. Also, higher achievement sometimes leads to a feeling of greatness and pride which hinders our growth and understanding of our faulty parenting styles.
Furthermore, lack of proper job, poverty leads to frustration and feeling of failure which could further encourage Authoritarian parenting.
