2) Compare the circulatory system of the heart for fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

3)Define a mammal and distinguish between the three major types of mammals.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1.

  • Both annelids and molluscs are bilaterally symmetric, triploblastic
  • Have organ system level of organisations, coelomate animals.
  • Both have complete digestive tract.
  • They respirate through gills.
  • Their larvae called as trochophore.

2. Fish -

  • Heart is 2 chambered(one atrium and one ventricle) known as venous heart means it contain only impure blood which is sent for purification to the gills.
  • The system is single circulatory system.
  • Sinus venous is present.

Amphibians -

  • Heart is 3 chambered (2 auricles and 1 ventricle).
  • The system is incomplete double circulation as separation of compartment is not complete.
  • Sinus venosus and truncus arteriosus are present.

Reptiles-

  • Heart is 3 chambered ( 2 auricles and 1 ventricle) . V
  • Ventricle is partially separated so there is less mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood so called incomplete double circulation system.
  • Sinus venosus is well developed.
  • Right and left both systematic arches present.

Birds -

  • 4 chambered heart ( 2 auricles and 2 ventricles). The system is called double circulation system.
  • Right aortic arch present.Sinus venosus is absent.

Mammals -

  • 4 chambered heart ( 2 auricles and 2 ventricles).
  • The system is called double circulation system.
  • No sinus venosus. Only left aortic arch present.

3. Mammals -

  • Mammals are cosmopolitan , homeothermic, having milk producing glands(mammary glands) to nourish the young ones
  • Having hairs on skin, and horizontal diaphragm .

3 major types of mammals are prototherians , metatherians, eutherians

Prototherians-

  • Egg laying mammals.
  • Mammary glands without nipples and is functional in both sex.
  • Cloaca is present.
  • Testes present inside the body.
  • In brain corpus callosum is absent.

Metatherians-

  • They keep their young one in abdominal pouch called marsupium like in kangaroo.
  • False placenta are found .
  • Nipple is present with mammary glands.
  • The females reproductive parts is two in numbers.
  • Bifid male copulatory part presnt.
  • Corpus callosum is absent.

Eutherians-

  • True placental mammals gives birth to mature baby.
  • Have true placenta which nourishes baby.
  • Nipple is present.
  • Reproductive part of female is single in number.
  • Copulatory organ is simple in males.
  • Corpus callosum is present in brain.
