UPS has integrated its IT system into their competitive forces
without much difficulty. With the integration of one of the IT
system to the business, now UPS are able to calculate the cost of
every of their business activities easily. With the help of this
system, UPS has analysed that it is cheaper to outsource their
less-travelled rural areas delivery of postage to USPS as it can
benefit both parties.
With the IT system Package Level Detail (PLD), where the
packages are linked with bar code data, it helped UPS to have
uninterrupted tracking and at the same time being able to lower
down the overall costs. By outsourcing, UPS are able to expand
their destination of delivery wider and at the same time able to
keep track on the packages. This system (PLD) is also integrated in
other IT assets such as operational databases and data warehouse.
With the help of these two systems it enables UPS to calculate
their costs accurately.
Another competitive force for UPS will be their supplier. They
have successfully integrated their IT systems among their supplier.
With the use of linking system with their suppliers, their
suppliers will have to directly input the shipment data. With this
system it helped UPS to save time by processing the
customer-centered information. By doing this, instead of UPS
sending the packages back to the warehouse for delivery, they now
scheduled them to be directly delivered to the producers.
With the integration of these IT systems into UPS, it not only benefits the company but also the customers as well. The company will be able to minimize or even draw out inefficiency by having their customers to enter their information directly into UPS order systems in advance of pick up. With this system Geographical Information System (GIS), UPS are now provided with the competency of improving the work flow of the company. Customers will be entering their PLD data into their ordering system, and the GIS system will appoint the resources for pick up, and later on sorting, and delivering the packages. By doing that operational flexibility is generated to manifest the most efficient route, delivery times and locations. Though customers have to key in their information on their own, the time for shipping is moved from 5.00pm to 8.00pm which is something that benefits them.
