1. The company is involved in the below activities:
United Parcel Service (UPS) is an American multinational package delivery and supply chain management company.Along with the central package delivery operation, the UPS brand name is used to denote many of its divisions and subsidiaries, including its cargo airline (UPS Airlines), freight-based trucking operation (UPS Freight, formerly Overnite Transportation), and retail-based packing and shipping centers (The UPS Store). The global logistics company is headquartered in the U.S. city of Sandy Springs, Georgia, which is a part of the Greater Atlanta metropolitan area.
2. History of UPS:
UPS traces its history to 1907, when the American Messenger Company was started in Seattle by 19-year-old James E. Casey and another teenager, Claude Ryan. Using a borrowed $100 as their initial capital, they set up shop in a cellar beneath Ryan’s uncle’s tavern. Their first employees ran errands and made deliveries on foot or by bicycle. A second office opened in 1912. The following year the company merged with a competitor and acquired its first delivery truck, a converted Model T Ford. At this time, the founders decided to concentrate on delivery of packages from stores and therefore changed the company name to Merchants Parcel Delivery. In 1930 the United Parcel Service moved its headquarters to New York City; it steadily expanded thereafter. Cofounder Casey was active in UPS management until his death in 1983. He, his family, other UPS executives, and their families were the principal stockholders for most of the company’s history. Not until 1999 were shares first offered to the public.
3. Most interesting things about UPS are below:
The paint color UPS trucks are painted in is called "Pullman Brown", named for the Pullman Company, which made rail cars and would paint many of them in this handsome color. Jim Casey actually wanted to paint the trucks yellow. One of his partners suggested the brown color because it would hide dirt better.
UPS is really big, UPS delivers 60% more packages than archrival FedEx daily more than 4 billion packages and documents a year, to customers in 220 countries and territories around the globe. But it takes a lot of manpower to cover such a broad surface area (basically, the surface of the globe).
UPS pays its employees very well ... the average pay for a [UPS] driver is $75,000.
