You have recently been elected president of the United States. One of your most popular positions is that you want to reduce the costs of doing business in the United States. When asked how you intend to accomplish this, you reply, ‘‘By seeking to repeal all laws that create unnecessary costs. Repealing such laws will be good not only for business but also for the consumer since product costs, and therefore selling prices, will be reduced.’’ Congress heard the message loud and clear and has decided to repeal all environmental protection laws.
a. Discuss the short- and long-term implications of such a policy.
b. How would such a policy affect the global competitiveness of U.S. companies?
c. What reactions would you expect to such a policy from (1) other industrialized nations and (2) developing countries?
a) Environment policies are created to ensure that any damage to the planet in the race of economy is avoided.Environment needless to say plays a vital role for survival and also for any organization.Repelling all environment laws is not really a wise step since in long run it will lead to disastrous effects.
In the short run such a policy may seems attractive for nation's economy as t will lead to many cost savings but in the long run it will not just be disastrous for people in general and ultimately lead to loss of revenue for the country as people will not prefer living in a place with major health deteriorating issues and loss of people will lead to ultimate loss of economy
b) Introduction of such a policy will have a negative impact on US economy in the long run since people will not like to live in a nation where there is a danger on health of themselves and family and will migrate to other countries will lead to loss of business positions and will impact the economy. Also having such policy in long run will deteriorate the health of people and unhealthy people can't bring much productivity. The US government will have to spend a huge amount of medical treatment in long run.
It will even sour the relationship with other countries since such policies will affect environment at large and other nations will be equally affected .
c) Whether it is some industrialized nation or a developing country, no one will welcome such a policy since it is a fact known even to small kid that how important it is to save environment and thus have environmental policies to safe guard ourselves against our own deeds.
