In what areas/ways do you think women have yet to create an equal playing field for women both in work and in personal areas and how can we solve these problems?
Women, for long, have been treated as second class citizens. They were expected to do the household tasks and bear children. They were sexually dominated and cruelly treated. They had to struggle hard to get their rights from the hands of their oppressors, men. They fought for the right to vote, education and property and now the struggle is for equal treatment at home and at work. This inequality shatters their confidence level and trust on men and the society.
Women are still expected to take care of the kids and cook when they come home, although they spend equal number of hours as men at work outside. Men still sit and watch television and very few men help women with their household work. Most of them are couch potatoes who watch television, play video games, party with friends etc. while women come home after a long day’s work and start a second shift at home by cooking, cleaning and washing.
Violence against women at home is another are to be improved. Men still think they could verbally and physically abuse their wives or girlfriends because they consider women inferior to them. This domestic violence has to be tackled in order to bring equality at home.
Women are treated differently in the society. All the advertisements and movies show women as a glamorous thing which could be used for sexual pleasures. So, more women and girl children are raped and there is no security for them when they go out to the society.
Workplace equality is another debate point. Inequality in terms of wages and promotion is practiced against women. Men are paid more for the same job that women do and when it comes to promotion women are overlooked, especially when they go on maternity leave, their service so far is entirely forgotten. Sexual harassment at workplace is another considerable problem that women face.
Employers should look at the output or outcome at the end of the day rather than have a preconceived notion that women will work less. Governments should regulate the wages and salary even in the multinational corporations. Severe punishments should be given for people who sexually harass women at workplace. Men should start treating women as their complementary partners who have the same right to live on this earth with all dignity.
