This essay is an exploration of the idea of vanilla versus kink, which in many ways is a discussion about what counts as "normal." VANILLA. As we've learned this quarter, sexual behavior across the globe is incredibly diverse. What is "vanilla" sex in America? Provide examples. Next, explain how vanilla sex is culturally/socially constructed. Can you think of examples of sex acts in America that are "vanilla" but might be considered kinky or even disgusting elsewhere? KINK. In 2016 America, kink is "in." If we look at the data coming out of the erotica and porn industries, the BDSM/kink genres are the fastest growing. What is "kink?" What is BDSM? How are they different from "vanilla?" In your judgment, what do you think it is about American culture in general that leads many of its people to be curious about or dabble in kink? Can you think of any sex acts that today might be thought of as "vanilla" in America but maybe once were thought of as kinky? Can you think of examples of "kinky" things that many vanilla people try? Finally, share your thoughts about the distinction between "vanilla" and "kink." Where is the line drawn, if at all?
1. Vanilla se-x is referred to as the conventional forms of se-x that would meet the basic expectations that prevail in a culture. This is identified in the heterose-xual se-x where the missionary position is referred to as the vanilla se-x.
2. Since a long time, the society has defined the ways in which one should conduct themselves and this also extends to se-xuality. The society has devised some norms, tagging some of the As being normal and some other actions being identified as abnormal. The actions that were defined as normal, came to be popularly known as vanilla, and actions not vanilla, came to be identified as kink. Kink defines crooked or bent ideas.
4. Kink is where people use fantasies or weird dress ups in concepts so as to create a bend in the se-xual behavior. BDSM are a variety of ero-tic actions that involves role playing as well as dominance, submission, discipline, sadomasochism, or other personal dynamics. Bdsm referred to bondage and discipline, sadism and masochism and dominance and submission. This is different from vanilla as this falls in the category of non normative se-x. This include body modification,m which is not observed in vanilla se-x.
5. The fact that the American culture is so defined in identifying which se-xual practice is normal and which isn’t, creates a bifurcation in the society. People tend to get more interested in things that they are asked not to, the fact that kink is not really encouraged and was not as prevalent in the earlier times, makes people more inclined towards trying. The thought that “there’s no harm in trying once” makes people curious.
