Ans) Evolution is mainly dependent on variations, reproductive success and Fitness of an organism. These should be increased and the beneficial traits must be passed on to next generation and the deleterious traits are elininated over time by the process of natural selection i.e also known as survival of the fittest.
Sexual reproduction consists of process of recombination in Prophase-I of Meiosis-I (4 strand stage of Meiosis), crossing over during Prophase-I of Meiosis-I, independent assortment in Metaphase-I of Meiosis-I . Due to these processes, several different combinations of traits are possible in the gametes and the daughter cells are genetically different from the parents unlike daughter cells in mitosis. Since, the daughter cells acquire variations in the meiosis, these variations can get accumulated over time and slowly this will result in evolution. Thus, sexual reproduction has evolutionary significance and asexual reproduction has no evolutionary significance.
