Neurons are basic building blocks of
nervous system that are specialized in sending and receiving
information. The main function of each of these nervous system
cells is communication of information throughout the body. The main
parts and functions of each part of neurons are:
- Dendrite- The tree like extension
at beginning of each neuron is dendrite. Dendrites are the
information receiving center of a neuron. Dendrites receive
information from the axons of multiple neurons to which they're
connected, and the interlinking chains between the cells.
- Soma- Also called cytons or cell
bodies. The information from dendrites are passed on from the cell
body. Soma has nucleus and other vital cell organelles as
mitochondria. They do not actively take part in the transmission
and receiving of information, but, provide the neuron cell with
energy and growth necessary for this process.
- Axon- Axon is modified dendrite
that forms the outlet of the neuron cell for sending information.
They transmit outgoing information as neurotransmitters that are
received by the adjoining dendrites of other neuron cells.
