Discuss a concept you have learned in that could be used to address natural resource sustainability issues on Prince Edward Island. Expand your thoughts and ideas.
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is one of the smallest province in Canada and mostly dependent on natural resources found in the Island. They are dependent in natural resources with distinct law and order but over-exploitation of resources/slight mistake in the system, can lead to imbalance in the environment and compromise their health in the long run.
To address the natural resource sustainability in the province, there are some points that we need to discussed;
1. Control over-cropping and the use of fertilizers. It is learnt that soil erosion in the province came to light which will eventually destabilize the ecosystem.
2. There is a need of effective and enforceable implementation of forest policy/law.
3. There is also a need of proper regulation for selling and buying of land in the province. As seen, many were interested for commercial purpose, there is a high chance to misuse the resources in the province. The fact is that half of the province is covered with forest and only one-tenth of the forest belongs to the province.
4. Gross income can also be maximize through tourism rather than exporting resources.
5. Sand is one of the natural resources which balance the sea-level. Scooping of sand for commercial purpose in bulk should be discourage and ascertain there is no such practice.
6. Fishing and other marine products is also one of the major income for the province. However, with the increase in export, they are compromising the other aspect. It is to be noted that there is need to specify the limits.
7. There is a need of introducing the use of Solar Panel for the purpose of energy as the region has no option for hydro power.
8. Sense of community ownership and well-being to be strengthen.
