13. Describe one supportive measure for severe ARDS.
Answer - ARDS stands for acute respiratory distress syndrome. It is a condition in which the air sacs/alveoli are filled with fluids. The fluid keeps the lungs from filling with enough air, which means less oxygen reaches the bloodstream.
One of the supportive measure for severe ARDS include;
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): ECMO can be used in patients suffering from serious respiratory failure and when traditional therapy can not sustain sufficient oxygenation. ECMO may fully replace the function of the lungs, but due to various complications, the risk and benefit need to be weighed.
ECMO consists of an extracorporeal circulation of blood produced through an oxygenator and a pump. There are two vascular accesses, one to drain the venous blood and one to infuse the oxygenated blood. After the major vein has removed the blood, it is then pumped through a circuit containing an oxygenator which oxygenates the blood and removes the carbon dioxide.
